When you open your Henna with Heart pack, you will find that there are TWO compostable bags filled with powder.

For the RED Henna pack:

Both bags are filled with pure henna powder so if you have shorter hair, you can store the other bag to use for later!

For the LIGHT BROWN Henna pack:

For your light brown Henna with Heart, the ratio is 1 part henna to 1 part indigo. We provide 100g of indigo powder (with 20g of amla) and 100g henna powder. Your hair length will determine how much powder you use.

For short hair:

Use half of the henna powder and half of the indigo powder.

For shoulder length hair:

For long hair:

When henna comes in pure powder form it needs to have water added to it and then it needs to sit to 'activate' for a period of time. Other popular henna brands all include the same amount of time = 8-10 hours of activation and 2-4 hours of leaving in your hair. This is a very common process with henna brands.

We highly recommend that you look at the ingredients of any henna packs that claim to dye hair in 30 minutes as this is not possible with 100% pure powder.

This is a great opportunity to take some much needed time out for yourself while you use the henna. Check out of the KNOT OKAY. library for some self care ideas while you henna your hair.

Yes and get ready for a vibrant result! Fair or light hair shows the biggest change in colour. Look at the Henna with Heart Colour Chart in our Essential Henna eBook to make sure you know what you are aiming for and strand test. Just remember that all of our hair is different so you might get slightly varying results. Who wants to be the same anyway?

Some people freeze the paste and store this for later use. However, please note that we cannot guarantee the strength of the henna paste once it has been reused. The good thing is that our packaging is reusable!
To get the best results from your Henna with Heart, we recommend only freshly mixing what you need at the time of henna application and keeping the remaining henna powder in the resealable Henna with Heart pack.

Yes! Gray hairs are coarser and so they are a little harder to dye.

For the light brown and dark brown packs, we include one bag of henna powder and one bag of indigo powder. Indigo is from the plant indigofera tinctoria and this gives the dark colouring naturally. During the henna process, you add the indigo paste to the henna to create the darker colour.

With gray hair, it can be difficult for the indigo to bind to the hair follicle. You may see the orange colouring on the gray part and this is the henna.

For the the most effective way to color gray hair, we highlyrecommend:

1. Activate the henna powder and dye your hair with only henna first. Leave for 2 hours, then rinse.

2. Activate the indigo powder and dye your hair with only indigo next. Leave for 2 hours, then rinse. (The timeframes for activation are the same as above)

It may seem like a longer process but trust us, it's worth it!

We get it! If you're not happy, you're not happy. Henna is a semi-permanent hair dye but you can try olive oil to take out the henna dye. Cover your hair in olive oil and sleep on it. We then recommend shampooing your hair in the morning to remove the oil. You may need to repeat this oil application again.

Always speak to your doctor or healthcare specialist before using henna.

If you have used the light brown or dark brown Henna with Heart and your hair has turned a red colour, this means that the henna ingredient (lawsonia inermis) was absorbed more than the indigo (indigofera tinctoria). We recommend trying another application but please feel free to contact us.

Yes! Henna works on all hair types but please note that henna may reduce the size of your curls if you have curly hair.

Yes, thanks for asking! Although our henna powder is 100% natural (we chemistry test each batch), some people may be allergic to natural henna. It's kind of like how some people are allergic to peanuts or bananas even though these are natural!
Please strand/ skin test prior to using our henna paste. Please follow instructions in your Henna with Heart Pack.

This is to ensure they are 100% natural. Pre-mixed henna products require chemicals or preservatives as the dye begins to be released when the powder is mixed with a liquid. But don't worry, there is something about mixing the henna ourselves that makes us fall even more in love with our hair colour afterwards!

Please note that our henna powder can last for 3 years. We've kept you in the loop by letting you know the harvest date which you can find on our packaging.

Yes - cool, right?! Our Henna with Heart packs are a mixture of 100% natural plant ingredients so the colour of the dry powder will be between a green and brown, depending on the pack you have purchased.

Although our henna powder is 100% natural, we recommend using our henna powder only for your hair. We do not recommend use around the eye.

Curly hair may require more henna powder and more time to allow the paste to dye your hair. Add a little more water to your henna to make the application easier. Please note that you may notice a slight loosening of your curls.

Yes, unfortunately there is a small part of the population who find themselves allergic to NATURAL henna. Even though our products are 100% natural (and we make sure of this through rigorous testing procedures), this does not mean that henna can't cause allergies. Remember that peanuts or bananas cause allergies and they are natural, right? Please let us know if you experience an allergic reaction with our products.

We recommend 2-4 hours, particularly if you are dying your hair for the first time.
Please strand and/or skin test prior to full application.

The idea of using lemon juice is that the acid breaks down the lawsone dye which is in the henna powder. Some say to use lemon juice as it is acidic and this is believed to help release the dye for darker tones.

For others, the use of lemon juice can lead to an itchy or irritated scalp. Regular use of lemon juice may strip away the natural oils on your hair and your hair can also feel brittle.

Henna is a plant that rejuvenates and deeply conditions your hair. While you may want to experiment with this, it is not essential! KNOT OKAY. encourages the use of warm water instead, approximately 158 Fahrenheit/ 70 degrees Celsius works best.

Henna works differently to chemical hair dyes. While chemical hair dyes changes the chemical composition of the hair strand for the desired colour, henna will create a layer to coat the hair strand with reddish to brown tones. For this reason, henna cannot lighten darker hair but can give gorgeous reddish undertones when stepping into the light.Β
