It seems that there has been a recent surge in the number of proud plant parents on social media and we are not mad about it! See below the top reasons to consider purchasing another houseplant… or 4!
Research has shown us that exposure to nature creates a calming effect on us. While the stress of some environments can cause anxiety, sadness and a feeling of helplessness, environments with plants can reduce anger, fear and stress which boosts our overall mood.
When we take a breath, our body is taking in oxygen and as we breathe out, we release Carbon Dioxide (CO2). Plants are the exact opposite and the Yin to our Yang! They take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen during the process of Photosynthesis. This means that with more plants around, there is a higher conversion of carbon dioxide to oxygen in your space.
Plants also purify the air around us by removing toxins. For example, it is suggested that there is a higher concentration of Benzene found in study settings where there are printed materials and books. These toxins are taken in and absorbed by plants.
When we surround ourselves in nature, we reduce our rising stress levels and mental fatigue. Studies of workers in office cubicles have found that the appearance of plants have shown an increase in work productivity and a decrease in employees taking sick leave.
And it is no surprise that having plants around us means that we are forced to stay in the moment when we take care of them. Caring for plants is a multi-sensory experience that requires most of our senses. This level of stimulation gives us a well-deserved distraction-free break from our screens and helps us focus on the little things.
While we surround ourselves with Monsteras and Philodendrons for their beauty, deep down we know that we have a bigger part to play in helping our Environment.
